A Recipe for French Onion Soup with White Wine

Be first to comment

French Onion Soup is a classic and heartwarming dish that is perfect for cold winter nights. The combination of caramelized onions, beef broth, and melted cheese creates a rich and flavorful soup that is sure to impress your guests. Adding white wine to the recipe elevates the flavors and adds a subtle hint of acidity to balance the sweetness of the onions. Follow this recipe to create a delicious and comforting bowl of French Onion Soup with a touch of white wine.

Ingredients:

– 4 large onions, thinly sliced

– 3 tablespoons butter

– 2 tablespoons olive oil

– 2 cloves garlic, minced

– 1 teaspoon sugar

– Salt and pepper to taste

– 4 cups beef broth

– 1 cup dry white wine

– 4 slices French bread

– 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

– 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

– Fresh thyme sprigs for garnish

Caramelizing the Onions:

In a large soup pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes to an hour, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.

Adding the Flavors:

Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Simmering with Wine and Broth:

Pour in the white wine and beef broth, stirring to combine. Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

Serving the Soup:

While the soup is simmering, preheat the broiler in your oven. Place the French bread slices on a baking sheet and toast them under the broiler until golden brown on both sides.

Adding the Cheese:

Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls and place a toasted bread slice on top of each bowl. Sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyere and Parmesan cheese over the bread.

Melting and Browning the Cheese:

Place the bowls of soup with the cheese under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and slightly golden brown.

Final Touches:

Remove the bowls from the oven and let them cool for a minute before serving. Garnish each bowl with fresh thyme sprigs for an added touch of freshness and aroma.

Enjoy the warm and comforting flavors of French Onion Soup with a glass of white wine for a perfectly paired meal. The combination of sweet and savory flavors, along with the richness of the cheese and the acidity of the wine, will tantalize your taste buds and leave you wanting more.
