Discover the rich history, unique winemaking techniques, and exquisite wines produced at this historic site.

The History of Areni-1 Winery

Areni-1 winery holds a significant place in the wine industry as it dates back over 6,000 years, making it the oldest known winery in the world. Situated in the picturesque village of Areni in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia, this ancient winery was discovered in 2007 during an archaeological excavation. The remains of the winery provide valuable insights into the winemaking practices of our ancestors.

Archaeological Discoveries and Winemaking Techniques

The excavation at Areni-1 uncovered fermentation vats, grape seeds, and pottery vessels used for winemaking. These findings indicate that the winery utilized traditional methods such as stomping grapes with bare feet and storing and fermenting the wine in large clay jars known as qvevris. The use of qvevris is a traditional winemaking technique still practiced in Armenia and Georgia today.

One of the unique aspects of the Areni-1 winemaking process is the indigenous grape variety, Areni Noir. This grape has been cultivated in the region for thousands of years and is known for its exceptional quality and rich flavor profile. The combination of traditional winemaking techniques and the use of indigenous grapes contributes to the distinct character of the wines produced at Areni-1.

The Wine Experience at Areni-1

Although visiting Areni-1 winery in person offers a truly immersive experience, a virtual tour can also provide a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this historic site. During the virtual tour, you can explore the remains of the winery, learn about the winemaking process, and even participate in virtual tastings of the exquisite wines produced at Areni-1.
