If you feel like leaving an adult world behind for a day and literally drench yourself in red wine, then you should definitely join this super-soaked wine battle in small Spanish town Haro. La Batalla del Vino is literally translated as “The Wine Fight” and takes place in the heart of Spanish most famous wine region, La Rioja. Most renowned wine and food fight festival is held annually on June 29th where thousands of locals and tourist climb a mountain in La Rioja and throw more than 500 litres of red wine all over each other. The festival is held every year since 1965, where locals and visitors gather to celebrate the harvest of locally produced Rioja wine.
In order to join this wine fight, everyone is supposed to wear white shirts and red scarfs. The aim of the festival is to cover each other with wine until all their clothes completely turn purple. During the battle, you can use buckets, plastic bottles, jugs, water pistols or anything else that will spray the wine all over the crowd. After the fight, all visitors head down to the Plaza de la Paz where they continue with celebration accompanied by local food and traditional music.
