A beginner’s guide to French wine varietals

France is one of the world’s most famous wine-producing countries, and its wines are renowned for their high quality and unique flavors. In this beginner’s guide, we’ll explore some of the key French wine varietals and their characteristics, helping you understand and appreciate the diversity of French wines.

Red Wine Varietals

Cabernet Sauvignon: Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied red grape variety that is widely grown in France and other parts of the world. It is known for its strong tannins and flavors of black currant and cedar. Cabernet Sauvignon is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc, to create complex and well-balanced wines.

Merlot: Merlot is a medium-bodied red grape variety that is known for its soft tannins and flavors of red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries. It is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to add fruitiness and roundness to the wine.

Pinot Noir: Pinot Noir is a light- to medium-bodied red grape variety that is known for its delicate flavors and aromas of red fruits, such as strawberries and raspberries. It is a challenging grape to grow, but when done well, it produces some of the finest red wines in the world.

Syrah/Shiraz: Syrah (also known as Shiraz) is a full-bodied red grape variety that is known for its intense flavors and aromas of black pepper and dark fruits, such as blackberries and plums. It is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Grenache and Mourvèdre, to create complex and powerful wines.

White Wine Varietals

Chardonnay: Chardonnay is a full-bodied white grape variety that is known for its rich and complex flavors. It is often aged in oak barrels, which adds vanilla and buttery flavors to the wine. Chardonnay can be made in a wide range of styles, from crisp and fruity to rich and creamy.

Sauvignon Blanc: Sauvignon Blanc is a medium-bodied white grape variety that is known for its crisp acidity and flavors of green fruits, such as gooseberries and asparagus. It is often blended with Semillon to add richness and complexity to the wine.

Chenin Blanc: Chenin Blanc is a versatile white grape variety that is known for its high acidity and flavors of green fruits, such as apples and pears. It is often used to make sparkling wines, as well as dry and sweet white wines.

Riesling: Riesling is a medium-bodied white grape variety that is known for its high acidity and flavors of citrus fruits, such as lemons and limes. It is a popular grape in France and other parts of Europe, and it can be made in a wide range of styles, from dry to sweet.
